The Greatest Judgement
Many of us have heard of the Tigres and Euprates rivers. These two rivers are very famous in history. At the northern end of the Tigres river was a Syrian town called Ar-Rakah. During the reign of caliph's Harunur Rashid a very important event took place around this city. One day a letter was came to the caliph's court. The judge of the city of Ar-Rakah has been ill for a month. So the justice system has come to a standstill. The caliph fell into thought. He replied to the letter. The new judge will join the work next week. Hopefully everything will be fine. The following week the judge join to work as usual. The trial began. At the begining the law enforcers caught a helpless old woman and brought her back. Her crime was that she stole some bread and a bottle of honey from a food shop in the town. The judge asked her if she had stolen. The old said, "Yes, I did. The judge said, You know what agreat crime it is to steal. What's the funishment for that? The old woman said, " I could be jailed even my hand could be cut off. The judge said, Why did you steal? The old woman said, "I did not steal on purpose. I have not eaten for a week. Not only me, but also my two orphaned grand children. Unable two bear the pain of hunger I stole. Please forgive me. After hearing all the judge said that the verdict will given tomorrow. Further said, all the dignitaries of the society, including the chief of Police, Chief of the Sariah Complaint, Food Warehouse were requested to be present all at the trial tomorrow. Everyone come to the court the next day at the behost of the judge. Everyone is anxious to hear the verdict. The judge pronounced the verdict. The verdict is 50 whips and 1 year imprisonment for nonpayment of 100 dinars silver coin. Forgive him cutting off her hand for admitting the truth. At the end of the verdict the judge left his seat and come down stairs and stood beside the old woman. He sent someone to bring a whip. The whip was brought. The judge said that in a city where an old woman had to go without food for a week and could not bear the pain of hunger she had to steal food. The biggest culprit in that city is the caliph's of that country. Since I have became the representative of the caliph. Let 20 out of 50 whips kill me. As a judge should not be given any kind of concession. This is the order of the court. The judge stretched out his arms. Twenty consecutive whips were struck on his hands. He than said that the prominent people of the society including the head of the society, food warehouse could not provide sustance to a needy old lady in the society. so everyone is a criminal in that society. So let the ramaining 30 whips kill them equally. The judge then pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket. And 50 dinars silver coins on that. This time he said to everyone present that, the society forces an old woman to become of thief due to hunger. In a society where orphans do not eat day after day everyone in a society is a criminal. After that everyone present was fined 10 dinars. The total fine is 500 dinars. Out of these 500 dinars, 100 dinars were kept as penalty and 20 dinars were given to the owner of food shop. The remaining 380 dinars were given to the old lady for her maintenance. The judge then asked the old woman to go to the Royal court of Harunur Rashid In Baghdad the following month.
